Description
When his newspaper the Novascotian was sued for libel, Joseph Howe, champion of free speech, defended himself. He spoke for more than six hours non-stop during his trial at Province House in Halifax in 1835. Howe continued to fight for the rights and freedoms of Nova Scotians as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. Prime Minister John A. Macdonald praised Howe as a defender of the freedom of the press, as well as a leader in the fight for responsible government.
